What is the difference between AI visibility and SEO?
SEO competes for a position in a list of links; AI visibility competes to be the thing an assistant describes in its answer.
Search ranking is a competition between pages for a slot. The winner is whichever page best matches a query. AI visibility is a competition to be understood well enough that a model will say your name unprompted.
The inputs differ accordingly. Ranking rewards keyword coverage, link authority, and freshness. Being recommended rewards category clarity, answer-shaped structure, and checkable proof.
They overlap on hygiene. Crawlability, structured data, and a sensible information architecture help both, which is why a badly broken site fails at both at once.
The practical consequence is that they need separate measurement. Ranking reports will not tell you whether an assistant can describe your product, and a visibility audit will not tell you which keywords you are losing.
