Why does ChatGPT recommend competitors instead of me?

Almost always because the assistant can describe your competitor confidently and cannot describe you — not because your product is worse.

When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation, the model is not ranking products by quality. It is answering from what it can state confidently. If it cannot summarise what your product is, who it is for, and why someone would pick it, naming you is a risk it will not take — so it names something it can describe in one clean sentence.

Competitors that get named usually share three traits. Their homepage states the category outright ("X is a Y for Z"), rather than leading with a slogan. They have content shaped like answers — FAQs, comparison pages, use-case pages — that a model can lift from directly. And they have proof a model can point at: named customers, third-party coverage, review markup.

The practical test: paste your homepage copy into a chat and ask "in one sentence, what is this and who is it for?" If the answer is vague or wrong, that is exactly what every assistant sees. Fix the positioning sentence first — it is upstream of everything else.

This is also why the fix is rarely "write more content". A site with fifty blog posts and no clear category statement still gets skipped. Clarity, structure, and checkable proof move the needle; volume on its own does not.
