Does ranking well on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. They optimise for different things, and plenty of first-page sites are never named in AI answers.
Google ranking answers "which page best matches this query". A recommendation answers "which product should I tell this person about". A page can be the best match for a keyword and still give an assistant nothing quotable about what the product is.
The clearest example is a homepage built around a slogan. It can rank well on brand terms and still fail the basic test of stating a category. The assistant reads it, cannot classify it, and moves on.
The overlap is real but partial. Crawlability, page speed, and structured data help both. Keyword density, backlink volume, and title-tag tuning matter far more to ranking than to being recommended.
Treat them as related but distinct programmes. Good SEO hygiene is a floor, not a substitute.
